DGMK-Project Underground Storage Technology

H₂ compatibility of UT cements

Reason and Goal

The aim of the project is to find out whether the cements typically used for boreholes are also suitable for hydrogen in terms of long-term impermeability and resistance.

Summary

In order to achieve the climate targets, there is political consensus on the central role of hydrogen in all sectors. The storage of hydrogen is a basic prerequisite for sector coupling, as centralized energy storage in underground gas storage facilities (UGS) enables hydrogen to be stored for the long term with a secure supply. Due to the strongly fluctuating production of hydrogen from various sources and the equally expected strongly fluctuating demand, UGS will play a central role in the future energy system.
The necessary conversion measures of existing UGS to the medium hydrogen according to DVGW G260 5th gas family or the storage of natural gas-hydrogen mixtures can place special demands on the technical equipment (well completion), several aspects of which have not yet been adequately investigated.

One aspect here is the suitability of the cements used for cementing the last cemented pipe run (LzRT). The subject of the investigation is the suitability of different cement classes according to API, which are typically used for well cementation. These are to be examined with regard to their permanently low permeability to hydrogen and, possibly depending on the penetration depth, the question of whether a relevant change in the cement structure occurs is to be answered. If effects are to be expected, these should be evaluated with regard to the mechanical and sealing properties. Furthermore, the bonding of the cement to the rock and pipe and the resulting impermeability to hydrogen should be tested.
