Reason and Goal

The overall aim of the project is to develop an innovative integrative concept for medium-depth geothermal probes that can be economically and technically integrated into the heat supply of smaller municipalities and industrial parks that do not yet have a district heating network.

There are a variety of options for extracting heat from the subsurface. Medium-depth borehole heat exchangers are part of the future "geothermal mix". To date, however, the actual heat output of most medium-depth borehole heat exchangers has been below the design data. There are many reasons for this, but to date there has been no systematic survey in this regard, although there is considerable potential for optimization. Another challenge that slows down geothermal projects is the lack of efficient connection of these systems to local heating networks, especially in smaller municipalities. The future development and expansion of heating networks must take the use of geothermal energy into account as part of sector coupling. The multidisciplinary research project will comprehensively address these reasons.

The Overall project "Closed medium-depth geothermal systems for decentralized heat supply" is divided into three sub-projects:

01 - Geosonde400+Bau (Optimized construction of medium-depth geothermal probes)

02 - Geosonde400+Perform (Optimized operation of medium-depth geothermal probes)

03 - Geosonde400+heat network (integration of medium-depth geothermal probes into the municipal heat supply)

The project is being funded as part of the "Leading technologies for SMEs" program.

DECHEMA is a cooperation partner.
