Georg Hunaeus Prize 2025 for Dr. Sebastian Hogeweg

This year's Georg Hunaeus Award winner has been announced: Dr. Sebastian Hogeweg has been nominated for the award by the DGMK Board and will be presented at the DGMK/ÖGEW Spring Conference by Jens Müller-Belau, Chairman of the DGMK Board.

On the scientific career of Mr. Hogeweg:
He completed his Bachelor's degree in "Energy and Raw Materials" with a specialization in "Petroleum Engineering" at Clausthal University of Technology in 2018.

He then continued his studies and his work as a research assistant at the Institute of Subsurface Energy Systems at Clausthal University of Technology. Mr. Hogeweg completed his master's degree in 2020 with two master's degrees, which he obtained as part of an exchange program. He completed his studies at the TU Clausthal
(Petroleum Engineering - field of study "Reservoir Management") with distinction, and his stay at the École Nationale Supérieur de Géologie (Nancy, France) with a final grade of 18.2/20 (trés bien) as the best in his year and obtained a further Master's degree there.

During his subsequent work as a research assistant at Clausthal University of Technology, he expanded his expertise from the experimental side to numerical modeling. In particular, he developed the open-source
DuMux simulator to model and better predict hydrogen-specific processes that may occur during underground storage.

Dr. Hogeweg has worked on research projects such as

  • UMAS ("Underground methanation in aquifer storage", 2020 to 2022, funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics
    and energy)
  • EU research project "HyUSPRe - Hydrogen Underground Storage in Porous Reservoirs" (EU Horizon 2020, 2021 to 2024)
  • the HySTORAGE hydrogen pilot project of Uniper Energy Storage GmbH

In March 2024, Mr. Hogeweg defended his doctoral thesis entitled "Numerical Investigations of Reactive Transport Process during the Storage of Hydrogen in the Porous Subsurface", which was awarded "summa cum laude".

You can find out more about this in his presentation, which Dr. Hogeweg will give at the DGMK/ÖGEW Spring Conference on May 8, 2025 in the "H2 Storage" session.
