Research report published: Criteria catalog for additives in heating oil

For around 20 years, the DGMK has been concerned with test criteria for additives used in fuel oils. The third new edition is now available.

According to the requirement standards DIN 51603-1, DIN SPEC 51603-6 and DIN/TS 51603-8, the use of additives is permissible under certain conditions to improve/ensure the quality of heating oil. DGMK had last documented in 2017 in DGMK Research Report 646-2 test criteria for additives that can be used in heating oil EL, standard, heating oil EL, low sulfur or heating oil EL A Bio.

Current test criteria for the use of additives in paraffinic heating oils are available

In the recently published DGMK research report 646-3, an extension was made for the use of additives in paraffinic fuel oils according to DIN/TS 51603-8. Compliance with the stated specifications is intended to exclude undesirable side effects of additives when used in fuel oils as far as possible.

Minimum test criteria and test methods were selected and examined by laboratories for differentiability and manageability. Against the background that some test methods cannot be used for the evaluation of all fuel oil qualities, the defined minimum test criteria vary depending on the fuel oil quality: 6 minimum test criteria were defined for additives to be used in fuel oil EL according to DIN 51603-1 or DIN/TS 51603-8. For additives to be used in heating oil EL A Bio according to DIN SPEC 51603-6, 5 minimum test criteria were recommended.

The minimum test criteria defined in this report are primarily intended to provide guidance in the selection as well as the application of additives.

DGMK Research Report 646-3 is published bilingually (German/English) and replaces the last version 646-2 from 2017. The German version is authoritative.

DGMK Working Group Additives

The work was accompanied by the Additives Working Group. This is a joint working group of the Technical Committees for Fuels and Fuels. It has been active for more than 20 years and is made up of experts from the fuel industry, petrochemicals, development service providers and manufacturers of filter systems.
