Alternatives to conventional fuels are being sought worldwide. Alternative fuels such as biodiesel and synthetic products have the potential to significantly reduce the GHG emissions of technical processes. Already today, there are a large number of production processes for alternative fuels and thus an equally large variance of the same. If the potential of alternative raw materials is to be fully exploited, the properties and interactions of the fuels in potentially emerging multi-component blends must be investigated.
Research report published: Chemical and physical stability of middle distillates with alternative components
For this purpose, the BMWi has funded a research project in which, among other things, the interactions of different fuels during storage were identified and thus the long-term storage behaviour of complex multi-component fuels (e.g. HEL, OME and GtL) was characterised.
In addition, the researchers at the OWI and the Max Planck Institute have developed a long-term storage stability model of complex fuels with a high paraffin content. This provides information on the course of the oxidation stability and it is thus possible to adapt the fuel selection on the basis of the expected storage period of the application.
The structural elucidation of the fuels and ageing products requires further research.
