Research Report Published: Additive Interactions in Rolling Bearings

Additives are added to lubricating oils for rolling bearings to fulfill a variety of specific functions and ensure their service life. These include protection against wear and corrosion. In practice, various additives are combined to ensure effective lubrication. Polar additives, such as anti-wear and anti-corrosion additives, act directly on the bearing surfaces by forming boundary layers. Interactions between polar additive groups can sometimes lead to competition or synergies, which influence the wear and corrosion protection of rolling bearings.

An understanding of additive interactions is essential for lubricant developers and users.

The project has been completed and the results have been published. Read the details in DGMK Research Report 848. Effect of Corrosion Inhibitors on the Wear protection for oil-lubricated rolling bearings. The report is available free of charge from the DGMK.

BMWE-Funded Research Project Completed

To this end, the BMWE has funded a research project aimed at investigating the interactions between EP/AW and CI additives and evaluating their impact on the wear and corrosion protection provided by lubricants containing a combination of these additives.

A follow-up project is in the works: DGMK Project 902 builds on these results and systematically investigates the influence of CI on the wear protection of oil-lubricated rolling bearings, as well as its effects on tribocorrosion protection.
