2026 Georg Hunaeus Prize for Dr. Benjamin Haske
Regarding Mr. Haske's academic career:
He completed his part-time degree program in 2021 at the Georg Agricola University of Applied Sciences in Bochum with a master’s thesis titled "The Applicability of Freely Available Remote Sensing Data to Issues in Risk Management Systems for Abandoned and Active Mining Sites.".
In April 2025, Mr. Haske completed his dissertation, titled „Drone and Satellite Remote Sensing as a Contribution to Integrated Safety and Environmental Monitoring of Underground Storage Facilities"“Graduated with the grade "Summa cum laude."”.
Mr. Haske's dissertation has a number of positive aspects that contribute to the scholarly exploration of the topic of monitoring underground storage facilities.
The most important aspect is the topic’s high level of timeliness and societal relevance. This is particularly evident in the context of „Regulation (EU) 2024/1787 of the European Parliament and of the Council of June 13, 2024, on the reduction of methane emissions in the energy sector and amending Regulation (EU) 2019/942.“ Under this regulation, gas-related facilities are required to conduct very detailed spatiotemporal monitoring of methane emissions, identify potential leaks, and repair them.
On the DGMK/ÖGEW Frühjahrstagung Dr. Haske will be in the "Monitoring & Emission Management" Session on May 7, 2026 He will discuss this further in his presentation.
