Research Report Published: No-Harm Application Tests for Additives

Since the early 1980s, additives have been specifically developed to reduce the formation of deposits from middle distillates in injectors. Various engine test procedures are used for targeted evaluation. Currently, the “no-harm” testing of additives to assess their tendency to form deposits using engine tests is time-consuming, and the engines used no longer reflect the state of the art.

The ongoing development of fuel injection systems—driven by increasingly stringent emissions regulations and changes in fuel composition—requires a completely new approach. The BMWE funded a research project on this topic, which has now been completed. By combining the Diesel Deposit Formation laboratory test (DDFT) with the ENIAK test bench test, an alternative to engine testing was evaluated.

BMWE-Funded Research Project Completed

The studies were based on five reference fuels/fuel blends and twelve different additives from the following groups:
Cold-flow improvers, lubricity improvers, and antioxidants. The test is applicable to both internal and external deposits in common-rail injectors, although the focus of the work was on oxidative deposits at the nozzle tip.
