Hydrogen is considered a key component in the decarbonization of industry and mobility. However, the use of this climate-friendly energy source poses entirely new challenges for established technologies. Changed combustion and operating conditions in hydrogen engines and compressors call for new lubricant concepts. A recent research project has now conducted an in-depth investigation of the properties and requirements of customized lubricating oils and laid an important foundation for practical applications.
Research Report Published: Lubricating Oils for H2 Applications
Compared to conventional fossil fuels, hydrogen combustion results in different operating conditions. Critical factors affecting the lubrication system include: high water ingress due to hydrogen combustion, altered aging processes, and potential effects on oil aging, wear, and corrosion.
BMWE-Funded Research Project Completed
To this end, the BMWE has funded a research project to find systematic solutions to these challenges.
The project has been completed, and the results have been published.
Read the details in DGMK Research Report 854 Research and testing of custom lubricating oils for H2 applications. The report is available free of charge from the DGMK.
