Project Launch: DGMK 914 – Current Status of Measurement Methods for Implementing the EU Methane Regulation in Upstream, Transportation, and Storage

On July 1, 2026, the research project „Current Status of Measurement Methods for Implementing the EU Methane Regulation in Upstream, Transportation, and Storage“ was launched. The project will run for six months and examine the current state of the art in the measurement and quantification of methane emissions in the upstream, transportation, and storage sectors.

The project is a collaboration between the Post-Mining Research Center (FZN) at Georg Agricola Technical University (THGA) and the German Scientific Society for Sustainable Energy Sources, Mobility, and Carbon Cycles (DGMK). The goal is to systematically catalog available measurement methods, evaluate their suitability for the requirements of the EU Methane Regulation, and analyze the comparability of the measurement results. Both modern measurement systems and practical experience from operators are taken into account.

The project arose from the issues and needs discussed in the DGMK Monitoring Working Group. The results are intended to provide companies with scientifically sound guidance in selecting appropriate measurement methods and to contribute to the harmonized implementation of the EU Methane Regulation in Germany.
