Project Start: Development of a Fast-Ageing Method for Middle Distillates

On 01.03.2020, the DGMK project 798 "Development of a Fast-Aging Method for Middle Distillates for Modelling the Longterm Aging Behaviour by Using Online-Measurement of Multiple Stability Parameters" started.

The ageing of middle distillates is a major issue for all long-term applications. These include, for example, oil heating systems, mains backup systems, seasonally used vehicles, and hybrid systems with electric drives. Due to the increasing efficiency, as well as the growth of combined technologies, the storage time increases. Therefore, the project aims to further develop a method for the rapid representation of ageing processes. The method was developed in the predecessor project DGMK 763 and is based on the principle of the PetroOxy test on a larger scale. This made it possible to differentiate fuels with regard to their stability, similar to the results of long-term storage.

In the now started project 798, the fuel matrix as well as the analytics during the test runs will be extended. Promising measured values are permittivity, conductivity and viscosity. A suitable sensor is to be selected and then installed in the test rig from the previous project. Tests on the converted test rig will then be compared with long-term storage. The correlations between the measured values from the storage and the test bench are to be used to develop a model for predicting the long-term stability of fuels.
