Make the energy transition happen

The energy and raw material transition is the declared goal and the subsurface sector is on the move! Under the motto "Exploring the subsurface potential - make the energy transition happen", the DGMK Geo-Energy Systems and Underground Technologies Division and many other interested parties met for the annual DGMK / ÖGEW Spring Conference to discuss, share and network together.

In the best weather and even better mood, more than 620 experts from the fields of geosciences and engineering came together at the Congress Union Celle on 31.5.-1.6.2023 to be inspired by the latest findings from research and development in 55 technical presentations and 22 posters.

In addition to sessions such as Drilling Technology, Petroleum Engineering, Production Engineering Geoscience and HSE, there were many contributions on the topics of Energy Storage, Underground Storage and H2 Storage. The sessions on Digital Transformation, Transforming while Performing and Monitoring were directly related to transformation and presented new approaches in the world of work, in the use of machine learning and in citizen participation. The geothermal energy session was also very well received again and was given special recognition in the Cellesche Zeitung.

The plenary speakers with Jürgen Rückheim (Chairman of the Department of Geo-Energy Systems and Underground Technologies) from left to right: Jens Müller-Belau, Anne-Mette Cheese, Jürgen Rückheim, Carsten Büker.

With plenary speeches by Jens Müller Belau (Shell), Karsten Büker (ThyssenKrupp) and Anne-Mette Cheese (Wintershall Dea), a wide range was covered, from global use and demand for energy, chemical (re-)use of carbonaceous (waste) gas and CCS supply in Denmark, UK and Norway.

In the poster exhibition, young scientists presented their current research. The winner of this year's Poster Awards is Julia Michelsen from TU Clausthal with the poster contribution "Experimental investigations and development of a correlation to characterize the diffusion process of hydrogen and methane during UHS".

Stefan Engelshove and Prof. Dr. Leonhard Ganzer present the certificate to the winner of the poster award Julia Michelsen.

Alexander Godow from Nordzucker AG showed us how great the challenge is for a completely different industrial sector and what concrete paths have already been initiated and taken. He impressed the audience with the company's energy diversification approach, taking us into the world of sugar production for half an hour.

"It was super informative and, in terms of networking, worth its weight in gold," wrote an enthusiastic participant after the conference. We take this as an incentive for next year!
