Research Report on Spray Lubrication with Flow Greases Published

The aim of this research project is, on the one hand, to transfer the transferability of the results of test method A/2.8/50 according to ISO 14635-3 on the seizure and wear behaviour of flow greases carried out on the FZG gear tension testing machine with immersion lubrication, to the special features of injection lubrication. For this purpose, systematic experimental investigations are carried out on the basis of the standardised test method, but with injection lubrication. The results of the investigations in the case of injection lubrication are evaluated in conjunction with the results in the case of immersion lubrication. On the basis of the investigations, recommendations for the testing of flow greases with regard to their scuffing and wear behaviour in gear wheel applications are developed. A further aim of this project is to verify the calculation of the gear load-bearing capacity for the damage type pitting according to ISO 6336 for grease-lubricated gears. Previous investigations have shown a lower pitting load capacity for gears of the material pairing case-hardened/tempered with grease lubrication compared to oil lubrication. The calculation method does not yet reflect these differences.

On the basis of systematic load capacity tests with grease spray lubrication and the related evaluation with results of tests with immersion lubrication, recommendations for the application and modification of the load capacity calculation are given.

The IGF project (18464 N) of the research association DGMK Deutsche Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Erdöl, Erdgas und Kohle e.V., Überseering 40, 22297 Hamburg was funded via the AiF within the framework of the programme for the funding of Industrial Collective Research (IGF) by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy on the basis of a resolution of the German Bundestag.
