Profile

The DGMK Deutsche Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für nachhaltige Energieträger, Mobilität und Kohlenstoffkreläufe e.V. is a non-profit, registered association based in Hamburg. The new long name of the DGMK was adopted by the members at the general meeting on November 4, 2021.

On December 31, 2024, the DGMK had 1,367 members, including 184 companies and other corporate bodies and 1,183 personal members. The purpose of the society is to promote science, research, technology and further education in its specialist fields. Our main topics are:

  • Exploration, deep drilling technology, extraction and storage of energy sources such as crude oil, natural gas, hydrogen and geothermal use of the deep underground
  • Processing and application of mineral oil, natural gas, and their derived products
  • Petrochemistry
  • Conversion of Carbon Carriers
  • Standardisation

We offer a neutral platform for technical and scientific exchange between industry professionals, university scientists, associations, retirees and students. We organize the exchange of information and experience in many different ways. Members as well as non-members are invited to our public events, such as conferences, workshops and lecture series.

We operate technical and research committees with their associated working groups on a wide range of topics. They serve the direct exchange between experts, who keep each other up to date with the state of the art of science and technology. This regularly leads to questions that we further investigate within the DGMK research.

DGMK research is another focus of our work. Here we pursue the goal of application-oriented research for our key topics. The research funding comes from both industry and the public sector. The DGMK is a member of the AiF and is therefore entitled to apply for funding from the Industrial Collective Research (IGF). The Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection supports the IGF with public funds.

In cooperation with the German Institute for Standardisation (DIN), the DGMK conducts standardisation work for fuels and lubricants in the FAM Technical Committee for Mineral Oil and Fuel Standardisation in close cooperation with the industry.

Since its founding year, the DGMK has formed the German National Committee (DNK) of the World Forum for Energy Transformation (WPC) - formerly the World Petroleum Council. The DNK sends industry experts who, as representatives of the German oil and gas industry, help to organize the WPC Energy Congress, which takes place every three years. At a forthcoming WPC Energy Congress, we advertise the event among our members.

In the context of cross-disciplinary, cross-industry and cross-national issues, we regularly cooperate with national and international organizations and associations. In addition to our Austrian sister organization, the ÖGEW Austrian Society for Energy Sciences, these include the DECHEMA Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, the GeCatS German Catalysis Society, the EAGE European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers, SCI Società Chimica Italiana and the SPE Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Vision & Mission

Vision

The successful implementation of the energy transition is one of the most challenging, fascinating and important tasks facing our society. The coming years must be characterized by groundbreaking innovations and pioneering technologies that the industry is developing and which will significantly change the industry. As the leading national scientific society, the DGMK supports those involved in actively shaping the energy transition from a scientific and technical perspective.
The DGMK is widely recognized for independent and applied scientific research on raw materials and energy topics. In this role, it promotes the development and evaluation of practical technological solutions, methods and technical standards in the fields of energy sources, mobility and the processing of carbon carriers and related areas. With a comprehensive network of experts from industry and science, the DGMK promotes cooperation and mutual exchange with the aim of finding integrated and sustainable solutions along the value chain all the way to the customer.
In the DGMK, we welcome and promote professional exchange, scientific challenge and open discourse. All those interested in energy topics are welcome. The DGMK's range of topics develops organically from the dialog with members and the exchange with the public and the expertise in the DGMK is constantly growing.

Mission

The DGMK is equally anchored in the energy industry and in the relevant research landscape. In this mediating role, we want to contribute to the achievement of global climate protection goals and therefore focus our work in all our specialist areas on topics that support and drive forward the energy transition and greenhouse gas reduction. We successfully transfer our expertise in the areas of fossil fuels to new and changing energy systems. Our contribution to resilient energy supply builds bridges between established and new energy sources. Carbon remains an indispensable building block for many chemical and energy products. Sustainable carbon sources and carbon cycles are therefore the focus of our activities.
As a non-profit association, the DGMK is committed to its statutory purpose of promoting science, research, technology and further training in its specialist areas. The DGMK works in a fact-oriented and independent manner.
The members of the DGMK - both personal and corporate - and their information and scientific needs are at the center of the DGMK's activities. The DGMK is active in German-speaking countries and is well networked throughout Europe.
Diversity is important in order to be successful. Our women's network She Drives Energy is an example of the strength of professional discussion through actively promoting diversity.
We are involved in a wide variety of research projects, both publicly funded and industry-financed. Project coordination and management as well as knowledge transfer are among our strengths: When implementing projects, we attach great importance to scientific quality and credibility, openness to results and the greatest possible transparency. For us, scientific facts and visionary impulses and industrial-technical issues are the ingredients for successful and sustainable change.
As the DGMK, we are an integral part of standardization in Germany (DIN FAM) and in Europe in order to create the basis for new, future-oriented and marketable products.
We organize relevant conferences and workshops, often in international cooperation. Our events bring industry and research together and offer a platform for interdisciplinary and cross-sector exchange. We believe in personal encounters and the strength of networks to drive topics forward together.
