Bavaria is an important location for the energy industry and research in Germany. Several pipelines for gas and petroleum products run through Bavaria, which are of major importance for the German and European energy supply. Bavaria is the location of several large refineries and natural gas storage facilities, which are very important for securing the domestic energy supply. In the field of geothermal energy usage from deep geothermal sources, Bavaria is the leader in Germany with its geothermal plants in the Munich area. Top-level research is also carried out in the energy sector at the state's colleges and universities, which regularly occupy top positions in national and in some cases international rankings.
