Investigation of soils contaminated with mineral oil - Estimation of concentrations in soil water by a percolation method -

In connection with the national soil protection law (Bundesbodenschutzgesetz) it is planned for risk assessment to estimate concentrations of contaminants in soil water according to the preliminary standard DIN V 19736 (current status: 3rd draft, 1997-04). In this standard a method is described for percolation of soil samples.

In this DGMK project the current draft (3rd draft, 7997-04) was applied to soil samples which are contaminated with mineral oil. Another aim of the project was to find a correlation between the soil concentrations and the percolate concentrations.

The most important results of this project are:

  • Soil contaminations with gasoline will be easilier percolated than contaminations with Diesel fuel or lubricants.
  • No correlation between the concentrations of mineral oil in soil and in percolate could be found.

The procedure described in the preliminary standard (3rd draft, 1997-04) is not useful for a sophisticated assessment of mineral oil contaminations in soils.
