Dynamics of the Central European Basin System (CEBS): Large scale models of the Paleozoic petroleum system in the North German Basin

The first part of this project (DGMK-Research Report 577-2/1) summarized the results of 36 research projects funded within the priority research program of the German Science Foundation (DFG) entitled "Dynamics of complex sedimentary basins under varying stress conditions by example of the Central European Basin System". The projects, co-sponsored by the DGMK-Project 577-1, were carried out from 2002 to 2008.

The second part of the DGMK-Project 577-2 focused on building a large-scale 3D model of the Central European Basin System (CEBS). A large scale structural model was developed at GFZ Potsdam in this context (DGMK-Research Report 577-2/2). Based on these results and further geological information on the Paleozoic, a dynamic 3D model of the North German Basin was developed at RWTH Aachen (PetroMod® suite software). As part of the results the temperature field and the generation and accumulation of hydrocarbons have been simulated. Finally, the CEBS has been classified and compared with other sedimentary basins worldwide (HJ Brink, DGMK-Research Report 577-2/4).

This research report covers the results of work carried out by RWTH Aachen within the second part of the DGMK-Project 577-2. It describes in detail the various data bases used to construct a 3D PetroMod® model for the North German Basin - reaching from Denmark to the midlands of Germany and from Netherlands to Poland - as well as the methods to integrate them into a uniform model. Then the model is discussed in detail.

Additionally a high resolution 2D model (PetroMod®) was compiled that reaches from the Osning thrust in the South through the Lower Saxony Basin and the Soltau Block to the Central Glückstadt Graben. Considering the characteristic distribution of the different gas provinces in this area, formation and accumulation of hydrocarbons, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide was modelled besides simulation of the burial history and temperature field.
