DFG-SPP 1135 "Dynamics of complex sedimentary basins under varying stress conditions by example of the Central European Basin System" - Project Summary

From 2002 until 2008, the German Science Foundation (DFG) funded a priority research programme entitled "Dynamics of complex sedimentary basins under varying stress conditions by example of the Central European Basin System". The main objective of this priority programme was to improve the quantitative description of the processes involved in the generation, fill and structural evolution of sedimentary basins including salt and fluid dynamics. The programme was co-initiated and made possible by the willingness of the German petroleum industry to release substantial data sets (wells, seismics, and more) for research work from the area of Schleswig-Holstein and other areas within the German part of the Central European Basin System. The allocation of data and industrial support of the programme was organized by DGMK in the framework of a joint industry-academia research programme (DGMK-Gemeinschaftsforschung Projekt 577-1). The scientific co-ordinator was Ralf Littke (RWTH Aachen) together with Ulf Bayer (GFZ Potsdam/FU Berlin) and Dirk Gajewski (Univ. Hamburg).

The 36 research projects conducted within the SPP 1135 have provided valuable information on processes in sedimentary basins. In order to organize and enhance the knowledge transfer from academia towards industry, E&P-Industry launched the new DGMK-Project 577-2 in 2007. The objectives of this project are to summarize the results of SPP 1135 and to support a further evaluation of data and results in order to build up a large-scale dynamic model of the basin. Finally, it will be investigated to what extent the results on the Central European Basin System can be applied in other basin systems worldwide.

This report summarizes the first part of DGMK-project 577-2.
