Oil pumps in Emlichheim, Lower Saxony (Germany).
The technical requirements for operating a well in an oil field vary according to the purpose of the well itself and the characteristics of the carrier. A production well has to be equipped differently than a well for steam injection, and sandstone is developed differently than limestone.
The tasks of the production engineer include designing the underground equipment for the well, selecting the appropriate pump and above-ground production equipment, and monitoring the operation of the well.
In the DGMK Research, technical challenges that arise during operation are addressed in particular. These include water treatment, mineral precipitation and corrosion, but also questions of retrofitting existing wells, for example for geothermal energy production.
