DGMK-Event Geo-Energy Systems and Subsurface Technologies

Cancelled: DGMK/DGGV Short Course: Introduction to Well Logging for Earth Scientists

Wintershall Dea House, Conference Zone
Überseering 40, 22297 Hamburg
The course language is English

About the Course

The course is aimed at geoscientists, petroleum engineers and natural scientists with a basic understanding of sedimentology. Participants will learn the basics of the different logging methods and the mainly geological interpretation of the logs in terms of lithology, porosity, depositional environment and fluid content (water, hydrocarbons). The different topics will be accompanied by exercises, focused on geologic applications. A hand-out consisting of the PowerPoint presentations will be provided to the participants.

Topics include:

  • Introduction: some literature, basics of drilling; rock properties, porosity, permeability.
  • Gamma Ray tools: measuring principles, type of tools, shale content, facies interpretation.
  • Porosity tools: measuring principles of Sonic log, density log, litho-density log, neutron log; porosity and lithology evaluation, log crossplots and corrections of porosity values.
  • SP tool: measuring principles, shale content estimation, porosity indication and other applications.
  • Basics of Resistivity tools: measuring principles of electrode and induction tools, microresistivity, interpretation methods regarding fluid content and facies.
  • Borehole Imaging: measuring principles of dipmeter, electrical imaging tools, acoustic borehole images, data processing and interpretation

About the Lecturer

Thilo Bechstädt has worked at various universities and in industry during his career. During his studies Thilo worked in mineral exploration in Austria and Greece and received his doctorate in geosciences from the University of Innsbruck in 1972 for a sedimentological research project in the Middle Triassic of the Northern Dolomites. From 1972 to 1978 Thilo worked at the Universities of Innsbruck, Freiburg im Breisgau and Munich and habilitated at this university. Also in 1978 he joined the petroleum company Deminex, Essen, and worked mainly for OpCos in Vietnam (as area geologist) and Libya (as chief geologist). In 1982 Thilo became Professor at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau and in 1991 Professor and Chairholder at the University of Heidelberg. In 2007, he co-founded the consultancy GeoResources, where he served as director until 2019. After retiring in Heidelberg in 2009, Thilo became for six years Full Professor of Petroleum Geology at the Jagiellonian University, Krakow. Since 2015 he has been Visiting Professor at this university.
