K³/C³ - Defossilizing the chemical industry - technological approaches & engineering concepts
Welcome
"Defossilizing the chemical industry - technological approaches & engineering concepts" - with this theme of our 15th conference we are hitting in the center of one of the major challenges of the energy transition.
The current political situation with the war in the Ukraine reveals in a dramatic way that the envisaged energy transformation in the European Union must deliver both, a positive impact on the climate and a sustainable decrease in dependency on fossil resources in the medium and long term.
Concerning the electricity production the transformation towards zero carbon emission seems to be straight forward - the electricity production will need to be mainly based on renewables and nuclear by mid of the century. However, if the energy transformation wants to be a success, it needs to be rolled out over all sectors.
For the chemical industry and other industrial sectors carbon will remain an essential building block in the future. If those industries are to be brought on track to net zero emissions, measures have to be developed and applied which help to
capture and re-use CO2 from industrial production processes and eventually result in closed carbon cycles over the lifetime of the products.
While our last conference tackled primarily the topic of carbon capture and usage, this year's conference will focus on how to de-fossilize processes in the chemical industry. We are looking forward to a diversity of presentations ranging from issues like closing carbon cycles for chemical production and energy supply, sustainable carbon sources and their characterization, operational experiences for different thermochemical conversion processes of carbon carriers to, last but not least, socioeconomic aspects and the regulatory framework needed.
This conference will serve as a platform for intensive discussions and networking among experts from industry and science and we are particularly happy that, after more than two years of Corona, we can renew our tradition of hosting this conference in the historic city of Dresden.
